ABSTRACT
As part of activities leading up to the 150 years anniversary of the unification of Italy, the Center for Conservation and Restoration "The Venaria" (CCR) has been engaged by the City of Turin for a maintenance check on a large scale on about 215 headstones and memorials to the fallen of the Resistance and 10 of the Risorgimento. A detailed preliminary detection campaign has enabled to acquire the data on conservative and logistic problems of each manufact, thus allowing to make a proper planning of interventions.
The operational phase, which took place in only 3 months, has involved several teams of restorers and other operators, which have been supervised and coordinated throughout the city by the staff of the CCR. The fact that for the first time such a comprehensive maintenance was entrusted to a specialist staff is definitely a unique situation in the management of Cultural Heritage in Italy. This experience allows to outline the importance of maintenance in terms of conservation, aesthetics and economy. The intervention performed could not only secure the specific municipal assets, but also allowed to carry out that work of documentation that is essential to prepare a plan for periodic maintenance
