ABSTRACT
This article examines the case of “Sacro Monte di Ossuccio” as a significant example of an articulated and complex system of elements characterized by a strong interaction with the surrounding environment. The built elements include a sanctuary and a sacred path composed of fourteen chapels with terracotta statues and frescoes depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary. Although the maintenance and management strategies must address the issues of the conservations of the decorated surfaces and the condition of the statues inside the chapels, in this context, priority must be given to ensuring the integrity of the building envelopes in order to eliminate, or at least limit the main causes of degradation. Consequently, the emphasis shifts from the restoration of decorative elements and sculptural groups to targeted intervention channeling rain water, on roofs and on the external surfaces of the chapels. To this end, the Study of the Management Plan has focused on various issues and has established guidelines for the conservation of the chapels with the identification of priorities for intervention. At the conclusion of the first works promoted on the basis of this study it’s possible to use this documentation as a reference framework for the development of a proper strategy capable of detailing the activities of inspection and maintenance works to be included in a conservation plan.
