L’ACQUEDOTTO CELIMONTANO E L’ARCO DI SILANO E DOLABELLA A ROMA Conservazione ed estetica del monumento

ABSTRACT

The monument, the matter in hand, has been restored many times since it was built (I century A.D.) and afterwards, having lost its aqueduct functions, it has been used in different ways. Nowadays, since the handmade has not its vital elements any more, it is prone to urban and natural decay. After analyzing carefully both preservation interventions, which have been carried out so far, and the present deterioration conditions, as well as its causes, we focused on drawing up a planned maintenance of the whole Celimontano Aqueduct, giving priority to each urgent intervention. We especially dealt with the lacunae integration matter, which is the main problem of this monument. Several  kind of lacunae have been identified and so quite a few integrations have been suggested in order to  preserve the handmade but also to respect the aesthetics of it. We especially faced the case of Silano and Dolabella Arch, which is part of Celimontano Aqueduct,  to which has been worked out a decay analysis and subsequently a proposal to restore the surfaces, through simulation graphics showing the way chosen to integrate the brick curtain lacuna.
