ABSTRACT
This paper highlights the importance of cooperative programs and agreements for the Promotion of Cultural
Heritage – as detailed in Article 112 of the Code of Cultural Heritage and of Landscape (Italian Legislative
Decree no. 42/2004) – as a way to ensure the protection and enhancement of an archaeological park.
Because of the numerous parties involved in the management of these sites, the improvement agreement is an
essential tool that has to be carefully designed by taking account of the characteristics of the archaeological
park.
Two case studies are presented; the first one examines an agreement that is already being carried out at the
“Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia”, while the second one describes a protocol for the “Parco
ArcheologicodiCortona”whichhasnotbeenfullydefinedyet.Inbothcases,theagreementdefinestheroles
and the duties of the institutions that are in charge of the maintenance and development of the
archaeologicalpark.
